Postpartum Care

Follow up care after discharge from the hospital

  • Schedule an appointment to see your physician 6 weeks after delivery
  • Contact your physician or seek immediate medical attention for any of the following:
    • Heavy vaginal bleeding (soaking 1 pad an hour for 2 hours)
    • Severe abdominal pain
    • Depression, anxiety, or the inability to care for yourself or infant
    • Thoughts of wanting to harm yourself or others
    • Fever (temperature >100.4)
    • Breast swelling, redness, or tenderness
    • Pain or swelling in your lower legs, chest pain, shortness of breath, racing heart beat which could be symptoms of a blood clot in your legs or lungs
    • Pain, swelling, redness or drainage from your cesarean incision site or vaginal laceration repair
    • Severe headache and/or visual disturbances which could be a symptoms of elevated blood pressure (postpartum preeclampsia)

This list provides helpful indications to seek medical attention prior to your scheduled 6 week postpartum appointment. Please keep in mind, this list is not comprehensive. If you have something going on and you're concerned, call your provider for evaluation.
