Common Terminology

Menorrhagia:                                                 
Heavy and regular cycles.
 
Menometrorrhagia:                                        
Heavy, irregular cycles.
 
Anovulation:                                                   
Bleeding due to lack of egg production by the ovaries.
 
Hysteroscopy:                                                
A procedure to look inside the uterus with a thin, lighted scope.
                                                                       
Vaginal sonogram:                                         
A brief procedure using a thin probe in the vagina to visualize the uterus and ovaries using sound waves.
 
Endometrial biopsy:                                       
A brief procedure using a thin “straw” to take a tiny sample of the uterine lining for analysis.
 
Laparoscopy:                                                  
A surgical procedure using a thin, lighted scope placed through the belly button to diagnose and remove abnormal tissue.
                                                                      
Laparoscopic hysterectomy:                          
A surgical procedure using a thin, lighted scope placed through the belly button to remove the uterus.
 
Endometrial (uterine) polypectomy:              
A brief surgical procedure using a thin, lighted scope placed into the uterus to remove uterine polyps.
 
Saline infusion vaginal sonography:              
Similar to a vaginal sonogram, but with the addition of a small amount of sterile water to better see the uterine cavity.
 
Global endometrial ablation:                         
A brief procedure using electrical current, heat, heated water or other methods to cauterize (remove) the inner uterine lining to reduce or stop menstrual bleeding.  Women desiring this procedure should be finished with childbearing and use permanent surgical sterilization such as an Essure procedure, tubal ligation or vasectomy.
