Patients with heavy bleeding may think hysterectomy is their only recourse, but research supports other alternatives. In his published article in The Journal of Family Practice, Dr. Hill discusses alternative treatment options for abnormal uterine bleeding. His recommendations are as follows:

• The levonorgestrel-IUS is the most effective treatment for heavy menstrual bleeding, reducing blood loss by close to 100%.

• Endometrial ablation is an effective treatment for women who want to avoid major surgery and preserve their uterus, but have no wish to become pregnant in the future.

• Endometrial biopsy should be part of the evaluation of abnormal uterine bleeding in all women over age 35.
